An Example of an Educational ICT and its Impact on Practice

Task: Make an example by your group of an educational ICT and its impact on practice (200 words)

One of my friends, who is teaching in primary school, is using Wi-Fi together with Tablet PCs in his lessons.

The teacher asked all of his students to buy a tablet PC, and bring it back to school as a e-Schoolbag. Every day, the students bring their own computer to school, and the learning material will be sent from the teacher's tablet PC to theirs.

The learning activities are no longer limited to chalk and talk. Teachers sometime will send a question through the network, asking students to answer. Teacher will randomly choose a student and display his/her screen to the class and ask the classmates to comment. Sometimes, it could become a kind of competition, letting 2 or even 4 students to do some questions (like Maths questions) at the same time, and see who's the fastest. Another type of learning activities is something like a WebQuest. Teachers will provide some hyperlinks, and ask the students to look for information required by the questions (E.g. finding the temperature of the district).

The most important point in the set up is that students can bring the content home. For traditional use of PowerPoint slides, students can see the content but they cannot have it. They can have a hard copy but it could be difficult for them to keep and write their own notes on it. With the help of the e-SchoolBag, students can take notes on the lesson, and type them down on the teaching material they received from the teachers. This can facilitate the students' learning a lot, make the lesson much more interactive and raise their interest in learning.

  1. Interesting. I'm surprised you said: 'The teacher asked all of his students to buy a tablet PC'. This is normally for school/parent level discussion.

    Sorry, I should put it like:
    The school adopted the suggestion, and has put it forward to be a policy in some elite classes.

    Of course, there would always be some parents who have financial difficulties. I forgot how my friend's school make it happen. I may come back to it later.

  3. From my point of view, the new "E-learning" has brought the primary school students a lot of useful information, the latest view, and more interesting ways of learning. Besides, a heavy bag can at last "retire" as no more text books are needed, while only by downloading all the study materials from the website by teacher.

    However, as the new IT learning is in implementation, other influences can be seen, such as students may focus too much on the screen rather than a book or a note, which further can make them feel inconvenient in exams. Because when it comes to an exam, students should also come to the room, sit there, wait for the paper, and write by hand, unless the exams are changed into online exam, and further problems may happen (e.g. students can just get information from the website, which will force school to improve the supervision system).

  4. As far as I am concerned. ICT-innovation has changed the teaching pattern to some extent. Students are readily accessible to varies information source. For instance, there are educational videos, instead of distracting students from their class, actually make students more academical-motivated. Moreover, “e-learning” foster students' learner identity, and afford students a sense of community and competition (just as mentioned in our group example). Meanwhile, ICT-innovation enable teachers have more innovative ideas rather than preach.

    However, ICT-innovation put teachers, students and even parents to the test. Teachers have to take more time to make preparations before and after class. Furthermore,without proper guidance of teachers and parents, students maybe overly dependent on computers and go astray academically, psychologically or socially.

  5. After reading this, I am wondering that what level the students are. As I always question about students' ability of IC skills so as to really make use of the e-exercise and to what extent they can control themselves with lots of attractions online.

    As in my perspective, ICT can really improve teaching and learning in two aspects: one is it can obviously motive students with advanced technologies and another is that ICT has largely extended the materials, resources and accesses for teaching and learning. For the case above, it is really impressive in the sense that it motivated the students and provided with more recourses and accesses. However, the innovation goes in line with some risk especially when the students are too young to control themselves on line and when they are lack of the IT skills involved.

    In a nutshell, I am for the use of various ICT innovations in the domain of education, but it also of great significance to pay attention to the basic foundation, such as students' preparation, ability, autonomy, self-control.

    This case raises a question in my thinking that how we can find out the balance of innovation of technology and that of pedagogy.

    For our group's opinion, we think that in terms of education, innovation of ICT should be and can only be used as a support for innovation of pedagogy. The key aspect for improve teaching and learning still lies in the domain of teaching quality, which is pedagogy shortly.
